Sizing Children’s Clothing

Below are some general tips to help you in determining the correct size for your child.  When buying children’s clothing, it is important to remember that the sizes will vary between manufacturers and brands are not always consistent across items. The only way to be sure of a correct fit is to check measurements of an individual item.  Please ask us if you have any concerns on sizing for an item or need exact measurements.

Tip #1: Size Charts are Guidelines Only

This is a general size chart to serve as a guideline, but each brand may still use its own measurements for sizing their own clothing.  Whenever possible we have included a brand-specific size measurements in the item description.

Tip #2:  The Labeled Size is the Maximum Size When No Age Range is Listed

Up until the age of 24 months, if an item is labeled “12 months” or “18 months” without an age range, translate it to mean “9-12” or “12-18” months.

Tip #3: “3T” is Different From “3”

The overlap between Toddler (2T, 3T, 4T, 5T) and Child (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) sizes is a little confusing, especially since different brands have different criteria for distinguishing between the two size types.  Toddler sizes may be roomier in the bottom to accomodate diapers.  Child sizes may have a similar weight range but larger height ranges than the corresponding Toddler size.  Additionally, some Child sizes may have a different cut and style than their Toddler counterparts.

Tip #4:  Converting European Sizing is Easier Than It Looks!

European sizing is based on a child's height, so if you know your child’s height and can convert it from inches to centimeters, you will always know exactly which size to buy.
